The HANA Umami Red hand-built MC cartridge embodies the essence of ‘Umami’—a term officially coined in 1908 by Japanese chemist Kikunae Ikeda to describe a pleasing or delicious flavour that enhances overall taste intensity through synergy.
Hana’s master cartridge designer, Maseo Okada-san, expertly applies this concept by integrating premium materials and classic Japanese techniques with modern audio engineering to create the Hana Umami Red low-output MC cartridge.
The cryogenically treated MC generator features a samarium/cobalt magnet paired with a pure-iron square plate armature, hand-wound with high-purity 30-micron copper wire, achieving an internal impedance of 6Ω and an output of 0.4mV. The Nude Microline stylus, bonded to a solid boron cantilever, captures vinyl records' most delicate musical nuances.
The exclusive Auricle™ body design of the HANA Umami Red, complete with tapped mounting holes, mimics the shape of the human outer ear, providing rigid support for the cryogenically treated “Open Air” Moving Coil generator. It is machined from durable Duralumin, finished with a multi-layered Urushi lacquer inspired by the Japanese Makie artistic tradition, and features an Ebony Wood inlay resonance damper. A convenient stylus guard is included to protect your investment.
All major components of the HANA Umami Red are manufactured in-house by Excel Sound, where highly skilled craftsmen hand-assemble each cartridge. With over 50 years of experience, Master Designer Okada-san applies the Umami concept of synergy to this outstanding design.
The Umami Red cartridge offers an output of 0.4mV at 1kHz.
It includes a two-year guarantee and a ‘new-for-old or damaged’ replacement service.
