Founded in 1949 by Frank H. McIntosh in Silver Spring, Maryland, McIntosh Laboratory set out to revolutionise the audio industry. An electrical engineer, McIntosh sought to create audio equipment that delivered unparalleled sound clarity and fidelity. Collaborating with Gordon Gow, an equally passionate audio engineer, the duo developed groundbreaking technologies that laid the foundation for McIntosh’s enduring legacy.
The company’s breakthrough came in the early 1950s with the introduction of the "Unity Coupled Circuit," a patented amplifier design that significantly reduced distortion and improved efficiency. In 1956, McIntosh Labs relocated to Binghamton, New York, where its headquarters remain to this day. Following McIntosh’s retirement, the brand expanded its influence under Gordon Gow's leadership and became synonymous with the pinnacle of high-performance audio. McIntosh equipment was famously used at historic events, including the sound systems for Lyndon B. Johnson’s inaugural speech and the iconic Woodstock Festival in 1969.
